The project involves the construction of the Karamui Dam in the Simbu province.
More than US$2bn (£1.3bn) will be invested in the scheme, which will serve Papua New Guinea’s growing energy demand. The agreement with Salini-Impregilo forms part of the government’s drive to satisfy the need for new roads, highways, airports, ports, communication systems and power generation.
Salini-Impregilo has built more than 230 dams worldwide but this will be its first in Papua New Guinea.
