The project at Greenbelt maintenance yard in Maryland will allow WMATA to conduct testing and to commission new and rehabilitated rail vehicles. The project includes design and construction of an approximately 3,000m test track and a 15m-long mock platform.
It also includes a commissioning facility providing space for work on up to eight cars at one time, and an overhead crane, traction power, and embedded and pedestal rail. There will also be houses and a conference room. Skanska will also construct a 320-space car park.
The facility is being constructed to be able with the aim of receiving LEED silver certification. Work will start in July and is expected to be completed in March 2014.
