Icehotel was originally built in 1989 and has been recreated each winter in the village of Jukkasjärvi, 200km inside the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The enterprise is now being complemented by a permanent year-round hotel.
Twenty suites, an ice bar and a shopping mall are among the facilities at the new Icehotel, which will be a permanent 2,000m² structure.
A large chiller system powered by solar energy will keep the hotel rooms well chilled, and thanks to the long daylight hours of the Arctic Circle from May to September, the Icehotel will be able to stay open even in summer in a sustainable way.
Cowi has been commissioned by Icehotel in several disciplines and will be responsible for building and project management, construction and land, water and power.
“We wanted help with building management and certain construction work,” said Icehotel founder Yngve Bergqvist. “Cowi’ local presence was a key factor in our choice of partner.”
The new building will be officially opened on 4 November 2016.
