English Heritage hopes for work to start in May next year, with the visitor centre opening in October 2013 and all works completing the following April.
Estimated cost of the construction work is £12m to £15m.
As well building the centre itself, work includes construction of a new roundabout and associated carriageways at Airman’s Corner under a Section 278 agreement with Wiltshire county council, new internal access roads, and coach and car parking.
The visitor centre has been designed as two pods, one glazed, one timber-clad and partially glazed, both covered with an architectural steel canopy.
English Heritage is proposing that variant bids may be accepted with either a reduced construction programme or value engineering solutions. This will be confirmed at invitation to tender stage in August.
