The Penrith New Squares scheme, an extension to the existing town centre, collapsed in October 2008 when developer Lowther Manelli lost its funding and subsequently fell into liquidation. Contractor Thomas Armstrong was forced to lay off 20 staff when the scheme collapsed
J Sainsbury stepped into the breach and much haggling and debate over the scope of the scheme ensued.
The scheme now being builtincorporates the 55,000 square foot supermarket, car park, shops, restaurants and bars, as well as 199 houses and flats.
Thomas Armstrong is now back on site and preliminary works are underway. Housing construction begins this month and the supermarket is expected to open in April 2012.
