South Wales transport minister Gladys Berejiklian said the South West Rail Link was originally due to start carrying customers in 2016 but the project is now a year ahead of schedule and AU$300m under the AU$2.1bn budget. “I am pleased that as a result of good planning and management practices we are well under budget for the South West Rail Link,” she said.
A key flyover built for the project has now opened and is already helping deliver a more efficient rail network. The Glenfield flyover separates T2 South Line services from T2 Airport Line services. Previously trains from the two lines had to take turns at Glenfield, slowing them down and creating a bottleneck. “The Glenfield flyover now allows two trains to cross at the same time, ultimately delivering more reliable services for customers,” said Berejiklian.
