Terrace Hill Group has agreed a deal to buy the site of a paper bag factory in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, to redevelop into a supermarket and housing.
Subject to planning permission, the 12 acre former industrial brownfield site is being sold by paper bag manufacturer Welton Bibby & Baron, which is relocating to new premises in Wiltshire.
Terrace Hill plans a 50,000 sq ft foodstore and six acres of residential housing. A planning application is expected to be submitted in the first quarter of 2013. Completion of the acquisition of the site is conditional on obtaining planning consent for the mixed use development. Both Asda and Morrisons have reportedly expressed an interest in the site.
Terrace Hill also reports progress on three other of its development projects.
In St Austell, Cornwall, it is submitting a planning application this month for a new 80,000 sq ft foodstore on a site on Penwinnick Road close to the centre of town. The site is currently occupied by Cornwall Council in offices that will be relocated to new premises to be constructed by the council on an adjoining site. Development is expected to start in the middle of 2013.
In Sedgefield, County Durham, construction of a 48,800 sq ft Sainsbury's supermarket starts next month, with completion scheduled for May 2013.
And in Skelton, East Cleveland, construction is now underway on a 41,800 sq ft Asda supermarket, with  completion due in March 2013.
Terrace Hill chief executive Philip Leech said:Â "The conditional acquisition of the Midsomer Norton site adds to our substantial portfolio of nine committed foodstore development opportunities which will deliver excellent returns for shareholders over the medium term."Â
